Lizzie Abraham Obituary (1941

Our beloved mother, wife, sister, aunty, and friend, Lizzie Abraham, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, March 24 with her husband by her side. Lizzie entered this world on October 14, 1941, in the vibrant landscape of Kerala, India. She was the fourth daughter out of 8, born to C.M. Thomas and Mariamma Thomas, growing up in a family rich with love and care. At the tender age of 10, Lizzie embarked on an educational journey, attending Kottarakara boarding school where she laid the foundation for her future endeavors. Her path led her to Nuzvid Adventist Nursing School, where she pursued her passion and graduated with a nursing degree. From the outset of her career, Lizzie displayed an unwavering commitment to her profession, dedicating over four decades to caring for others with compassion and expertise. A few years into her nursing career at Nuzvid, fate intervened in the form of her brother-in-law Pastor, and Mrs. K. G. George, along with Dr. and Mrs. John Abraham. They played matchmakers and introduced Lizzie to an ambitious young dentist named George Abraham. Their journey together officially began in 1966 with a wedding ceremony in Pune, India, followed shortly by the arrival of their first bundle of joy, Sandra, in Jalandhar, India. Their journey together led them across continents, from the bustling streets of India to the tranquil landscapes of America. In 1968, they embarked on a new chapter in Lexington, KY, where George pursued his dentistry career. Lizzie, ever resilient, embraced the challenges of adapting to a new country, passing her American nursing boards with flying colors. Together, they navigated and built a life in a foreign land, welcoming their daughter Sally into the world. Later, the family moved to Loma Linda, CA for George to get a specialized master's degree in dentistry. Lizzie continued to work. After graduating from Loma Linda, George accepted a job in Baltimore, MD where the young family moved and soon added their third daughter, Georgina. Maryland would become the home base for this family of 5 for many years until later when they moved closer to Takoma Park so the girls could attend Adventist schools. Lizzie's 40-year nursing career in Maryland spanned several hospitals, culminating at Washington Adventist Hospital. Renowned for her efficiency and hard work, she garnered admiration from colleagues and doctors alike. However, it was her compassionate care, coupled with her trademark smile, that truly endeared her to patients. Known for her dedication to getting patients up and moving by 9 am! Lizzie's legacy of kindness and devotion to her patients and loved ones will forever be remembered. Lizzie's faith and deep love for God were evident in her daily life. She prioritized family worship every evening, nurturing a spiritual foundation for her girls. Active within her Adventist community, she served as a deaconess, Sabbath School Superintendent, and cherished member of the Malayalam choir at the Southern Asia Seventh-day Adventist Church. Her commitment to God, prayer, scripture, and church attendance was not only a personal calling but also a legacy she passed down to her daughters, shaping their lives with enduring spiritual values. Lizzie took immense pride in her daughters' accomplishments. She rejoiced as they married Adventist partners and remained close by, actively participating in their lives. Welcoming grandchildren, including Sara, Alayna, Jacob, and Sophie, brought her immeasurable joy. Lizzie dedicated countless hours to nurturing and supporting them, chauffeuring them to and from school, and delighting them with her renowned dishes like rice/dahl, lentil soup, and masala dosas. She cherished each grandchild for their unique qualities, showering them with love and affection. Throughout her very full life, Lizzie had many interests. She enjoyed talking to her loved ones regularly on the phone, gardening, and walking. She enjoyed watching game shows and making her family their favorite foods. Later in life, she traveled the world with her husband to the Holy Land, Asia, and Europe. She had a quiet strength and serving nature but she could be feisty when she thought the situation called for it. As we bid farewell to Lizzie, let us carry forward her legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering faith. Though she may no longer walk among us, her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us, lighting the path with her enduring love and grace. She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr.George Abraham; her three daughters, Dr. Sandra Abraham-Hebert (and Michael), Sally George Paradis (and Todd), Georgina Abraham Johns (and Rick); four grandchildren Sara and Alayna Hebert, Jacob and Sophie Straw; five beloved sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service for Lizzie will take place on Friday April 5 with visitation at 10:00am and the service at 11:00am. It will take place at the Southern Asia Seventh-Day Adventist Church located at 2001 East Randolph Rd, Silver Spring, Maryland 20904 with graveside at George Washington Cemetery and repast to follow.
